Berlin founders: stop applying randomly - here is the funding path that works

After analyzing Berlin’s startup funding from both academic and VC sides, most university teams fail because they miss the sequencing. Here is what actually works:

University-Based Funding (Start Here)

a) Berlin Startup Stipendium: €2.200 per month per founder, no equity. Some hosts (HWR/SIB) exclude EXIST alumni

b) EXIST - Existenzgründungen aus der Wissenschaft-Gründerstipendium: €1.000 - 3.000 per month for 12 months. No other stipends allowed, side work capped at 5 hours per week

Targeted Programs

a) EXIST-Women: September 1-30, 2025 applications (cannot apply after regular EXIST)

b) Impact Hub Berlin: Climate-focused tracks

c) MotionLab.Berlin: Hardware and deep tech resources

d) Entrepreneurs First: Co-founder matching (August 17 deadline)

e) German Accelerator: International expansion (October 13 deadline)

Why This Sequence Matters

Having seen countless teams burn months on wrong applications, the key insight is simple: Berlin’s funding works in stages, not parallel. Start with university programs (least dilution), then move to sector-specific acceleration.
